The instructions that accompany this are basically useless. C'mon, they can do better than this. Also the base for the XR covers the upper portion of the gas cap when installed which complicates fuel stops. The bag is made very well and I like the cinch down capabilities when it is not fully expanded. It's a lot of money but hopefully will last many years. Fix the mounting base and include proper instructions for each bike.
Ordered this for a '14 F700GS. Was concerned that it might be too big, but not an issue for me (haven't used it fully expanded yet, but handlebar/controls clearance are OK). Map pocket tends to flop around a bit at speed, but installing my old Touratech raincover over it solved that problem (and tends to keep rain out as well). If you need installation instructions - you won't find anything specific. You can poke around several websites/Youtube/Wunderlich and get some clues - but you're pretty much on your own to figure it out. One suggestion I would offer Wunderlich... please reverse the positions of the velcro (currently front) and strap (rear) holding on the map case. Currently you must unbuckle the strap before you can open the tankbag - while rear velcro would make that issue go away.
Elephant tank bag
This is my first purchase of a Wunderlich product and I am thoroughly impressed.
Design, build quality and attention to detail all excellent. The price point is high but you get what you pay for.
Very pleased with the overall performance of this bag. The reason I did not give it 5 stars is the connection between the bag and the baseplate started to come apart. Very minimal stitching here and after two years of hard use I just happened to see that the stitching had let loose about halfway across the connection. This area should be beefed up. My wife sewed it back on with nylon thread which will probably last forever, but this should never have had to be done.
The tank bag fits my F700GS perfectly. The design and workmanship are outstanding. The full-page reversible map case is so useful, just to mention one of its many great features. This tank bag has accompanied me for many miles on my F700GS over the last three years and it still looks brand new. I e-mailed questions to Wunderlich prior to purchasing and the answers were very prompt and helpful. Not sure how many tank bags I have had over the last thirty-five years, but this rates as No.1.
A Great Tank Bag
This tank bag is excellent, well made, excellent fitment. It is the second Wunderlich tank bag i have owned. The other went with bike when i sold it.
My only suggestion would be a built in rain cover.
Best. Tankbag. Ever.
Best. Tankbag. Ever.
Fits Perfect. Extremely well designed. Rock solid on the bike. You get what you pay for.
I have a 2014 f800 gs adv. and fit perfect, size excellent and the side pocket is perfect.
Well made product. It fits the bike very well with no real interference f
Not for a GT"L" model
This product was listed as fitting the K1600 GT and GTL. I ordered the bag and the mounting base. When you position the base where it allows the gas cap to be accessed, and then put the bag on, you can't turn the handlebars more than a few degrees before the bars hit the bag. You should not list this as fitting a GTL.
Beautiful bag, large

This is a nice bag. The base looks great if only for protection of the tank when the bag is not in use. I like others had a bit of trouble with the install until I figured out that the front strap routes DOWN and under the base of the frame. Routing it there the fit of the strap is perfect and secure. The bag is large. Unfortunately for me when it is installed it obscures my GPS in the manner that I have it installed. Oh well I'll just have to use the bag when I know where I'm going to....Great product.
Good quality bag
I have had this bag for a year now and it is holding up very well. Very well made. The bright blue lining is great for visibility and the side pouches are very useful. The quick detach mounting system is super convenient. I especially like the fact that I can use the bag on more than one bike and only have to buy a separate base plate. This has been the first year in a long time that I havenít been caught in a downpour, so it hasnít been tested in the rain.
Very nice bag. Seems to be very well made. Did not test in rain yet, but would use the cover anyway. Interior is spacious and even more so when expanded. Bag did push horn button for me once, but now I know! The map pouch is very nice, ended up storing my iPad in map pouch along with a map or two. Shock cords on exterior are nice. Side pouches held cell and other small stuff. Very easy on/off, especially during fueling of RT. Extremely secure if the additional straps are used on the base. Overall, very happy with purchase.
GTL Tank Bag
Quality of bag very good, but the bag is a bit awkward when turning handlebars to max while parking, hooter are sometimes activated as bag presses against handlebar and switches, Think T/bag without the sidepockets would have work better for the GTL.
Not very water resistant and not waterproof at all.
I'm currently in Alaska and we had about 1 hour of light rain. To my big surprise all maps are soaked and even the inside of my tankbag is wet. I bought this item specifically for this trip and with the first light rain big disappointment.
I also bought the upper bags and sprayed both the tankbag and upper bags with water repellent prior to the trip. What is the point of using waterproof zippers if the rest of the material is not waterproof?
The stitches for the velcro are going through the plastic of the map cover, hence this is a leak by definition. When the bike was parked for about 20 min. I could already see that maps were wet on the corners.
I don't know if I got a lemon but this is well below my expectations.
What I like:
- Finish and removal from base is well thought out, great for tank stops.
- Fastening mechanism is good
- Functional compartments and expandability
What I don 't like
- Water resistance is very minimal and not waterproof at all

I am very pleased with this bag -- took a recent trip to Nabesna, Alaska. A remote location with many stream crossing on the road.
Having access to everything -- without having to get off the bike was ideal. The road was comprised of soft loose gravel at stream crossing and dirt--the full bag did not disrupt the balance of the bike.
I bought this bag to put some accessories in for short rides. I have a tire plugger, air compressor, Leatherman tool, flashlight and have room to spare. Much easier than attaching and removing the hard bags. It is easy to attach to the base and is very secure. When installed, it does NOT move around and the base does not scratch the tank. It was a wise purchase.
Perfect for me.
I am very pleased with the quality of this product. The fitment on me F800Gs is great.
Fantastic tank bag!
First class design and extremely well thought out. You guys have thought of everything in this bag. Bravo!
Perfect for me
I bought the Elephant tankbag and have been very pleased with it in all aspects: fit and finish are excellant, the required base fits well after a little adjustments to the straps, size and capacity seem perfect for either day touring or extended travel. The clear map pouch fits snug and doesn\'t flop in the wind. So far the bag has mounted on the bike (using the base plate) and held firm in position even in heavy cross winds. No need to use the additional strap clips. Overall - Very pleased.
Elephant Tank Bag
I like the bag. The size is good though I have did not try it expanded as of this review, nor have I ridden in the rain.
All workmanship and materials are high quality. I have been riding for 48 years; I like it!
I like it
Purchased it for my K1300GT and so far it works well. Only problem was installation. I bought the base for it and couldn't figure out where to route the strap towards the front of the bike. I called the Wunderlich office in the USA and they pulled a guy from the shop to describe exactly what to do, excellent customer service.
I bought a cover for the bike as well now and looking to purchase the navigation mount. Excellent products that cost a bit more, but it is worth it.
nice tank g
Bought this tank bag for my new to me 09 gt. Had some trouble with the installation of the base that the tank bag attaches to you. Quick call to wunderlich and they pointed me in the right direction. Excellent customer support and the tank bag is very robust. Love it.
Seems to be a very well made and thought out bag. Lots of features and I like the fact that it is expandable so the extra space is there if I need it but I can normally ride with the bag in its shorter configuration which makes it easy to see the gauges and my GPS.
great tank bag and base
Just road my new BMW F800gs 3200 miles across country in all sorts of weather...really appreciated my new elephant tank bag...really nice size...i never did expand it...AND the mounting system is incredibly well designed and made....I really appreciate not having the long straps dangling in various places that some other bags have.... weather protection was good... a little leakage around the seams on the map case...needs to be seam sealed...no point in a waterproof zipper if the seams next to it are porous... Other than that a really great product
Elephant Tank Bag for F800GS
The overall construction is superior to most of the bags Iíve used. I like the bright blue interior because it makes it easier to find items in low light conditions. The mounting system fits perfectly on my F800GS, better than any other Iíve seen or tried. Yes, the bag costs a bit more than some of the other brands but it is definitely money well spent. Iím very happy with the purchase.
ELEPHANT BAG ON R1200RT
MOUNTING BASE FITS PERFECT & TANK BAG SEAMS VERY WELL MADE, ALOT MORE USER FRIENDLY THEN BMW TANK BAG, LIKE THE SIDE COMPARTMENTS FOR SMALL ITEMS SO THEY WILL NOT GET LOSE IN TANK BAG.
