Wunderlich Marathon Screen Vented

Absolutely love the new look this Marathon Windshield gives my 9 year old 1600 GTL Exclusive. I had an after marked vented clear windshield but I didn't care for the overall size. I'm excited to experience how it performs with my wife as passenger. A little early in Northcentral Wisconsin to be riding yet. Soon and very soon.

I knew within 5 minutes of my first test ride on the BMW K1600 Grand America that I would be changing the screen if I bought the bike. The OEM screen is styled to look like a cruiser screen, with a rounded top edge. The only way to get an effective pocket of still air is to raise it quite high, and then there is still a degree of buffeting from the wind getting around the the Marathon screen is cut with a much flatter and broader upper edge. The Marathon screen looks like it was made by BMW. It’s at least as sturdy as the OEM, and there is no optical distortion when you have it raised. The vent is quite clever; even when you have it “closed” so that no air is reaching the rider, air is still going through the vent and up the inside of the screen through the four “slots.” You don’t feel the breeze, but the low pressure area behind the screen doesn’t get turbulent. I was worried that the vent would obstruct my forward visibility, but I find it to be a non-issue, even with the screen raised fairly high. The screen mechanism is a little stiff out of the box. I lubricated it with some plumber’s grease (silicone and waterproof) to make it smoother. You can close it with just your left hand, but I recommend pulling over and using two hands to open it, because the vent flap flexes quite a bit if you just open it from the side. Maybe it will break in with use? I am 5’11” with a 32” inseam, and use stock Grand America bars and seat. I had hoped to get an effective air pocket with the screen just below eye level, like I could with my R1200RTW, but I’m afraid that the K1600 screen is just too far away from the rider for that. The best air pocket at highway speeds for me, either with the OEM screen or the Marathon, is achieved by raising the screen higher and looking through it. Used in this way, the Marathon is smoother and quieter than stock (stereo is much more effective too.) I experienced no turbulence or back pressure. I’ve seen no negative handling effects at speeds up to 85 MPH. Buy once, cry once. This screen is worth every penny, and I recommend it for the K1600B.

This is a wonderful windscreen. I installed it in a 2023 K1600B, and not only does it protect me much more from the wind, it makes the bike wiggle much less because of wind gusts. Must have for all of you baggers out there!
