    Instrument Surround

The instruments of the R1200 RT lay beneath a rather expansive clear plastic bubble. It not always easy to read all of the provided information, especially in bright sunlight. This instrument surround from Wunderlich, will give your bike that classic, round instrument appearance while noticeably improving the clarity and readability of the instruments and warning lights. Glare and reflections no longer obscure your view of vital information and any scratches, which may already exist on your instrument covering will be less visible due to the reduced reflection.

Made of vacuum formed, silver ABS plastic with a very hard and shiny finish. The part is highly scratch resistant and it has the quality appearance of a factory part. Easy to install using commercially available clear silicone adhesive. The instrument surround can also be painted if desired.

    perfect!
That large, flat piece of plastic containing the guages and the information LCD on a 2005-2009 RT is the ugliest dashboard design on any bike I've ever seen. It looked unfinished when I first saw it at the dealership, and I never even considered purchasing an RT because of it. The local dealership had a great deal on a used RT that I couldn't pass up. I mentioned the ugly dash, and they recommended this shroud to me. it really finishes look of the bike. It was easy to install, and the price isn't too bad. BMW realized how ugly the dash was, and they fixed it on 2010-2014 models with a shroud of their own. I think BMWs shroud looks a little bit nicer, and it can be fit to a 2005-2009 bike with some creative drilling and glueing. But for ease of installation and good looks, you can't go wrong with this piece. Shame on BMW for not putting one of these on in the first place.

    Helps reduce glare
Good service, perfect fit, helps reduce not eliminate glare. Didn't see point of included plastic sheet, so did not install it. Maybe it would have helped eliminate glare? Style does not quite match BMW -- edges a little too round, product is not quite the same black colour. Satisfied overall.

    Improves Instrument Readability
Build quality is excellent and the surround fits closely to the stock clear plastic facing. It's attached with a few dabs of RTV on its top edge. Installation took minutes. Wunderlich includes a pre-cut sheet of high-gloss clear vinyl that is supposed to be applied to the stock clear cover before the surround is installed. After reading numerous reports of problems with this sheeting on Wunderlich's website I elected to not use it. While the black surround does improve the aesthetics of the bland stock RT dash, I found it only marginally effective at reducing instrument face reflections. The top half of the central digital display benefited most; what I really wanted was to be able to read information in the bottom half. Reflections there and on the useful ranges of the tach and speedo remained a disappointing problem. My solution was to remove the surround and, after carefully cleaning the clear instrument face panel, and to install three pieces of a non-glare iPad screen protector (cut to just cover the tach, speedo and digital displays, the smaller pieces allowed bubble-free installation). I then reinstalled the surround. While the anti-glare sheet eliminates the reflections and allows me to read the panel under all light conditions, its distance from the plane of the displays produces a slightly "fuzzy", out of focus appearance when viewing the panel. While I can now see the bottom half of the digital display, I haven't really improved overall instrument readability. I'll live with this setup for a while and see if it grows on me. I may just remove the anti-glare film from over the tach and speedo. Bottom line on the Wunderlich Instrument Surround: by itself, full marks for build quality, ease of installation and aesthetics, 5/10 for glare reduction and overall value. With added anti-glare film on the stock instrument cover, 6/10 for readability of the digital panel, 3/10 for the tach and speedo.

    Nice fit.
I purchased the Instrument surround and was pleased with the fit and material used in the product. But..the clear adhesive film was also included with the extremely minimal instruction provided. I was able to use liquid to "float" it in place, no problem. But again when I checked the next morning the film had bubbles despite the attention paid to avoid this effect. I removed the film and attached the surround. Disappointed with the glare reduction film, happy with the surround.

    Looks great
This really finishes off the RT dash like it should have been done at the factory. I chose the silver, black probably would have looked good too. Maybe I'll paint it later when I'm tired of it. I didn't even try to put the film on after reading the other reviews. It seemed like a waste of time.

    Interesting experience
Previous owner installed this on my 2008 RT. I was traveling at 70 mph behind a truck when suddenly the surround was hovering up in front of my GPS. I was able to grab it with my left hand but had no way to secure it and now my clutch hand was full. I did manage to push it back in place and it stayed long enough for me to get pulled over. Upon inspection the silicon adhesive had completely let loose from the surround side. It stuck very well to the panel but there was no sign of it on the plastic surround. The previous owner had installed it in accordance with the install instructions on this web site. He actual l had more silicon spots than called for. There has to be a better way to install....especially for those of us in hot temperature ares.

Don't bother with the anti-glare film supplied.
The instrument surround itself is dandy. Well made and necessary. It's better than nothing at all. But it'll work better if the anti-glare film Wunderlich provides was installable. Unhappily, after 90 minutes of working with this film I gave up and pitched it. "W" must know this, because it isn't mentioned in the product description. One other customer reviewed this product and said he'd try the iPad anti-glare material. Would sure like to know if it works. I'll find something and cut to fit the instruments rather than the whole panel. that's why 4 and not 5.

Works well, looks like stock part, film was terrible
The silver color matches the bike plastic perfectly, and looks like it came from the factory. It definitely cuts the glare and reflections, even without the supplied film, which I had to discard. The supplied film to cover the panel was terrible. I have a lot of experience with applying films but this material was not typical. I cleaned the panel very well to ensure there was no dirt, and then tried to apply the film from the bottom, to line up the holes for the buttons. Once you get an air bubble, it cannot be smoothed out, as it permanently discolors the film, so if you don't get it right the first time, it looks awful, so I just discarded it and installed the shroud without it. I am going to buy the Apple iPad anti glare matte film, which can be cut and repositioned without discoloration
